When eating with a fork, should the tines sound against the teeth?

My father said that your lips should be closed in a way that when the fork was withdrawn from the mouth you should not hear the sound of the metal crossing over the teeth. He went to a private boarding school. He did not tell me he learned that there in the 1940's, I'm wondering if is this either an old tradition or an eccentricity of my father.
